Hill Elementary School was originally named Graymont Colored School and was established in 1909. Mrs. Rachel Lester Hill served in the capacity of both teacher and principal. Graymont School was operated for one year by the city of Graymont. In 1910, Graymont Colored School became a part of the city of Birmingham and was reorganized with Mr. Samuel Harris as teacher/principal along with a staff of three teachers. In 1920 the enrollment increase necessitated the renting of a building off Graymont Avenue and 3rd Street, North to house some of the classes. Enrollment continued to increase and in 1931 the Birmingham Board of Education purchased adjoining property and converted a house into five classrooms and added a two-room annex. In 1952 a new building was completed and dedicated and soon thereafter, during the summer of 1953, Graymont School was renamed Brunetta C. Hill School in honor of Mrs. Brunetta C. Hill who had been principal for twenty – one years. During her tenure as principal Graymont school had grown from four grades to eight grades. |

When school opened for the 1956 – 1957 school term new additions included eight new classrooms, a gymnasium, and an auditorium. At this time the old two-story frame house on Graymont Avenue previously used for classroom space was demolished to provide space for a playground. In 1980 Hill School was changed from K – 8 school to a K – 5 school and it remains so today. Brunetta C. Hill Elementary is located in the Smithfield section of Birmingham, Alabama, near the downtown business district. |
